In a recent article for New Republic, Andrew Delbanco highlights the increasing interest in Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the work of online learning. It’s a new model that replaces relatively small classroom settings with online courses that can be taken by mass audiences. One free MOOC offered through Stanford University attracted 160,000 students from around the world.
But not everyone is convinced that MOOCs are the next big leap forward in education, and that includes Delbanco. A professor of American literature at Columbia, Delbanco recounts in the article a conversation he had with a student about how profoundly he had been impacted by a lecture on the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson and doubts that a one-hour lecture segment viewed by hundreds of thousands of students simultaneously online could have the same effect,
